Legislatin Idea for Next Year

Posted on Tuesday January 27, 2009

Coaches email what you think about this idea: deltafajardo@gmail.com

Debaters, I welcome your thoughts as well, in fact if you are at all interested in the idea, talk to your coaches about it and try to get them on board.

I've been trying to think of ways to promote political issue advocacy, participation in legislation writing, and Congress of course. My thought is to have a contest for students and schools who participate in Congress by way of legislation writing. So far I've thought of these categories:

1. Best written piece of legislation (I'm either thinking per month and/or over the season)

2. Best topic (again either per month and/or over the season)

3. Best thought-out resolution, concurrent resolution, and bill (in other words, it makes sense, it is logical, and plausible though it not be written like a professional piece of legislation...And for this one, I'm going with best over the season)

4. Most amount of legislation written by a school over the season

5. Overall best school with good legislation over the season

When submitting legislation, the coach would mark which pieces of legislation they want to be considered as part of the contest.

Judging these may be an interesting route to take. I was thinking of contacting lawyers, city council members, maybe even legislative members to critique the legislation.

---Interestingly, I wonder if the same concept could be played out with LD, PF, and CX.....Thoughts?
