HHS Debate Parent Minutes July 7, 2010

Posted on Wednesday July 14, 2010

Minutes for July 7, 2010 Debate Parent Support Group Meeting:

-Those present-Mary Dye (Kyle), Nick Valle Sr. (Nick Jr.), Cyndi Koester (Olivia), Karen Edmisten (Sierra), Bobbie Rousseau (Danny), Bill and Diane Beachly (Evan), Jessica Meeske and her son Robert, Dawn Lapka (James), Roy Panwitz and his daughter Hannah, Linda Jasch (Brooke), and the Gragg family (Kenzie).

-Those not present-Linda Cooke (Tom), both Nguyen families, Heidi Thomas (Briton), Sharon Deepe (Mariah), Kay Sommerfeld (Katie). Carolyn Brown (Shaylee)

-Fajardo went over current status of accounts.  We are dipping into student accounts because we did not make enough money over the year to sustain all costs, and because during the summer the copy machine is still being paid for, there is no choice but to dip into the student accounts. (548.00 left)…Fajardo will make a sheet guesstimating expenses to help out all groups this coming year.

-Fajardo talked about meetings with both Speidell and Lifestyle Kitchens to do the Sweepstakes trophies out of black granite from Africa.  Lifestyles would possibly provide the scraps in a go-green effort and cut to size, and Speidell will do the engraving as a donation.

-Bobbie Rousseau, Danny’s mom, suggested officers should come up with a name for the tourney.  Officers will meet on this July 15.

-Fajardo talked about the issue of paying judges for the tournament under the budget concerns.  It was suggested to find people within law firms, Hastings College, Toastmasters, and Elks.  We will do this, but let’s hope they donate their time rather than ask to be paid.  We also have parents who can judge, and some of our Senior debaters.

-Group discussed ideas for fundraisers

*Bobbie Rousseau (Danny) suggested Group babysitting nights, where students engage little ones in life debate; like during snack time there could be a little discussion about how to really make a PB&J sandwich, or which way is the best way (check with Opperman concerning liability)

*Fajardo suggested dinner fore area businesses and organizations to come, listen to students, and do free-will donations/stocks in students.  (Jessica Meeske, Robert’s mom, said she would look more into this as she has done this kind of thing before)  As part of this, students would email and send pictures of progress in debate and at tournaments.  And we would have levels of stockholders for appreciation…bronze, silver, gold.

*Nick Valle Sr., Nick Jr.’s dad, discussed calendars made up of debate pictures to sell to area businesses (Fajardo will bring a sample and get pricing)

*This idea led into possibly handing out debate team posters with tournament dates like the sports teams do to gain awareness and support, maybe even use it as a “thank you” to businesses who donate.

-Fajardo went over the current status of Committee sign ups.  Here’s who we have for each committee so far…

*Tournament coordinator-Jessica Meeske and Todd Pankratz, parents of Robert.

*Awards-Diane Beachly (Evan) will chair.  Roy Panwitz (Hannah) will help.

*Concessions-Mary Dye, grandmother of Kyle Neugin, and Karen Edmisten, mother of Sierra, will chair.  Linda Jasch (Brooke), Sharon Deepe (Mariah), and Kay Sommerfeld (Katie) will help. (Looking into other organizations, Student Council, and National Honor Society for help on the day of tournament)...(Going to ask Phuong to see if we can get those egg rolls!!!)

*Community Public Relations both for the tournament and the year-Nick Valle Sr. (Nick) will chair.  Dawn Lapka (James), Bobbie Rousseau (Danny), and Cyndi Koester (Olivia) will help.  (I think Briton’s mom was interested, but need to contact her again)

*Debater Housing-Jessica Meeske and Todd Pankratz (Robert) know people from the college who can help with this.

*Debate work nights and listeners-Jenny Ziemba will chair….We haven’t talked about this much because it won’t be necessary to discuss until October, but Jenny will be responsible for calling/emailing people to remind them of their date to help with food and/or listen to debaters.

*T-shirts/Polos-Bill Beachly (Evan)

*Accounting-Randy Edmisten (Sierra)…possibly Nick Valle depending on situation.

*Debanquet-Mary Dye (Kyle) and Karen Edmisten (Sierra) will chair as they already are doing food for the tournament.

*Press Releases/Interviews-Most of this will be done through my debate officer, Mariah Deepe, but there are some things she cannot control, like getting our name on the slides for KHAS, or talking on the Saturday morning brief on team updates at Hogans.  We decided parents can sign up for individual slots so that one parent would have to commit to every weekend.

-Bill Beachly, Evan’s dad, asked about what t-shirt designs we are going for.  They are as follows-

*Team shirt for 10-11…This comes from an experience last year at a tournament.  My debaters were discussing Affirmative Action, and talked about Women’s Suffrage.  The other team asked for proof about the Women’s Suffrage.  My team stated that it was American History, and didn’t need proof that it happened.  The judge voted in favor of the opposing team and said that my team needed proof.  So this year our shirt will have this quote on it, “Quoting American History is NOT Credible”, and then we will have statements that we cannot assert to be true based on history alone, like “Man never walked on the moon”, “England still owns us”, etc.  After confronting other higher-up coaches about this issue, they agreed with me, but the damage was already done.  So this is meant to be a witty reminder.  J

*Tournament shirt for Nov. 21, 2010…All debaters and parents will be able to get a shirt like this.  The design is a t-shirt with a formal shirt sketched on with lapels, a tie, and pocket with button.  On the tie we will say “H-Town” or something HHSish, and then on the side without the sketched pocket, we will have a name tag graphic that says, “Hello, my name is…” and each shirt will be individualized with names.

*Polos are our embroidered shirt for varsity with new stripes added on for every year they get a varsity letter.  This is meant to be a classy and distinctive shirt to wear the day before a tournament at school, or traveling to and from tournaments.

*The last shirt is the team’s LIST.  This is a memories shirt that has a list of all the exciting, weird, and success moments of the year.

-There was a little discussion about payment for shirts.  The t-shirts are usually $12-$14 dollars.  Bill wants to check and see if we can go anywhere else besides Hogans, so he’s going to check other venues.  Students would be paying for these because it is their choice to get them.  The polos, on the other hand, are quite expensive, which is part of the reason why we are dipping into student accounts.  New polos range from $24-$30, while new stripes range from $7.00 to $10.00 depending on the year.  It was suggested that families would be welcome to donate half or all of the expense depending on ability.

-Food drive was discussed to help with debate work nights.  This could work several ways…Ask our business sponsors to donate a can of something, ask parents to donate, and/or ask teachers at the school if they’d be willing.  (Fajardo will check with Opperman on this, but the Food drive one way or another should be done.)

-Judging Nights July 27 and/or 28-Parents need only come to one if they want to be listeners at practice nights.  Come to more and eventual supplement workshops if they really want to judge for the HHS tournament.  Workshop will start at 4pm and go until 8pm.  We will learn Congress, PF, and then LD.

-Talked about getting in touch with Randy Kottwitz from Kool-Aid Days to donate kool-aid packets, maybe get the kool-aid guy, and donate/buy mugs from this year as speaker awards/1st-3rd place prizes for debaters.  He will need to be contacted after Aug. 15 as Kool-Aid Days will wrap up then to have free time to talk with us.

-Committees broke off into brainstorm groups for the rest of the evening.  PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT WAS DISCUSSED IN THESE GROUPS SO I HAVE AN IDEA OF WHERE EVERYONE IS AT IN PLANS.

-NEXT MEETING DATES.....Definitely meeting on August 4th at 6:30pm.  Some dates need to be set for certain fundraising activities, and committees need to breakout in PLANNING sessions.  No, I will not have a big long speech at the beginning.  This is for individual committee planning time, and I'm there for questions and setting up the calendar.  BTW...from now on, we will be using the www.hhsdebate.com website to post calendar information for the committee to help.  I also need to get feedback from you by the August 4th date on which of the next dates would work best for us to meet as we need to get a lot organized before the school year begins.  Teachers are requested to be back August 19th, and school starts the following week.  So, please choose one of these dates: August 11 or August 18 to make some final preparations before the year begins.  We will be meeting in the HHS library.  Please put my phone number in your phones.  Last time we had parents unable to get in because they were late, but had no way of contacting us to let them in- 402-984-6997.

Please let me know that a parent has received this.

Thank you so much for your help!
